Bret Michaels Looks For His Rock Of Love

2007
After getting favorable ratings for their unruly reality series Flavor of Love featuring hip-hop legend Flavor Flav, VH1 decides to cash in on a bygone era of rock n' roll with a similar spectacle called Rock of Love. For Rock of Love, VH1 recruits one the '80s biggest names in hair metal: Bret Michaels of Poison. The first season kicks off with 25 brazen young ladies gathering in front of Michaels' house for evaluation. Bret makes a predictable entrance on his motorcycle, and with the help of his bodyguard, Big John, settles on 20 women who will be permitted inside to compete for his affection.
In each episode, the girls engage in a challenge to capture Michaels' attention and help him determine who stays and who is eliminated. These frivolous "challenges" turn out to be irrelevant when compared to the mayhem in a house full of catty women who all have the same objective: Bret's devotion. With copious amounts of alcohol added to the mix, insults fly, hostilities rage between the often drunken rivals, and an atmosphere of aggression pervades the house. Michaels, however, seems unaffected by the heated confrontations and is simply enamored by the scantly clothed women dutifully offering a chance to please and thrill him.

The show is ostensibly about finding a woman to love, but Michaels seems distracted by the pursuit of pleasure. He picks a winner when the season ends, but an honest relationship never develops between the two, and the door is opened for another season of Rock of Love.

Season 2 proves equally unsuccessful in finding Michaels a true love, but ratings are great, so a third season is scheduled, this time on the tour bus. Renamed Rock of Love Bus with Bret Michaels, it goes on the road, as contestants travel across America while attempting to win over the adventurous rock star.

The drunken debauchery continues on the tour bus and the ladies inevitably become vicious. The show begins with 23 women, and Michaels whittles down the group by eliminating those who can't handle life on the road or don't make a romantic connection with him. Finally, after enduring the challenges and earning Michaels' admiration, Tara Parker is crowned the winner and becomes his new companion.

The couple date briefly, but it doesn't last. Michaels cashes in by releasing a soundtrack, and VH1 launches spin-off shows (starring several former contestants), including I Love Money and Rock of Love: Charm School. Michaels goes on to star in a new VH1 reality show Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It and continues to perform around the world with Poison.
