The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle

The Story of Vernon and Irene Castle

RKO, 1939, B/W, 90 minutes, ***

Released March, 1939

"You could be a perfectly wonderful dancer if you wanted to," Irene tells the vaudeville second banana who will someday be her husband. They were even more wonderful together. Vernon and Irene Castle became King and Queen of the Ballroom, creating the Castle Walk, Maxie, Texas Tommy and other sensations. The world followed their every move. Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers close their fabulous run of '30s films by portraying the popular dancers whose influence extended to pre-World War I lifestyles (Castle candies, shoes and beauty supplies were just a few of the duo's product lines). Period tunes and the stars' delightful stepping of Castle dances accent this film of goodbyes to a fond yesteryear and to the Astaire / Rogers RKO partnership. Apart, Fred and Ginger would make fine movies. But they were even more wonderful together.

Vernon and Irene Castle were a ballroom dancing husband and wife team who were a major sensation in the years prior to the Great War (WWI). Irene Castle served as technical director for this film, and also designed Ginger's gowns, based on gowns she wore at the time. Marge Champion, still using her real name (Marjorie Belcher), makes a very early appearance in this film. She is behind and to the viewer's left of Ginger at the show where Fred plays the barber shop comedy scene.

The film begins with the statement, "In a fabulous and beloved era, near enough to be warmly remembered, two bright and shining stars, Vernon and Irene Castle, whirled across the horizon into the hearts of all who loved to dance. This is their story.

The story begins in 1911...

Στο αμερικανικό κοινό, άλλωστε, είναι γνωστός από τους μικρούς ή κάπως μεγαλύτερους ρόλους σε ταινίες όπως το «Smashed», το «Hangover», το «I Love You, Man» και σε τηλεοπτικές σειρές όπως το «NCIS: Los Angeles» και το «House M.D.».

NICHOLAS BROTHERS in STORMY WEATHER

Stormy Weather

Stormy Weather

20th Century-Fox, 1943, B/W, 78 minutes, ****

Released July, 1943

Corky (Bill Robinson) is reminiscing about his life and experiences as an entertainer. The story is told as a series of flashbacks showing his struggles in the entertainment business. Shortly after World War I, he meets nightclub singer Selina Rogers (Lena Horne) and falls in love. But when he asks her to marry him, she refuses, because she is not ready to settle down.

Many years have passed, and now as he talks to the group of children gathered around him, Cab Calloway drives up and invites him to attend a show for the G.I.s. But the whole thing is a setup by Cab, because at the show, Bill meets up again with Selina, and they both realize they are still in love. A true classic featuring such legends as Lena Horne, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Dooley Wilson... Lots of great musical numbers!

This one is guaranteed to wear out your foot! The music is non-stop from beginning to end. The dancing is sharp and spectacular. Definitely one of the best musicals ever!

Rare Louis Armstrong recording released

A rare recording of one of the last live performances by jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong has been made public.

The star played at the National Press Club in Washington DC, against the advice of his doctors, in January 1971, just over five months before he died.

The What A Wonderful World singer had been in ill health because of heart and kidney trouble, but felt strong enough to play five songs at the event.

His performance has been released as a digital download and on CD.

The move was prompted by the press club discovering a rare LP of the event.

Those who attended the show, which was hosted by the British journalist David Frost, were given vinyl copies of the recording.

But the LP, which includes classics such as Hello Dolly, Mack the Knife and Rocking Chair, had become largely forgotten over the decades.

The liner notes included Armstrong's favourite recipes, such as Louisiana caviar and a New Orleans cocktail.

For most of the previous year, the jazz star had been too sick to pick up the instrument with which he helped define American music.

London 2012 Festival highlights

The final line-up for the London 2012 Festival has been announced, with Stephen Fry and comedian Tim Minchin the latest names to join the Olympic arts celebrations.

Other new events include a landmark dance event in Glasgow and a comedy barge trip from London to Edinburgh.

The 12-week arts festival is the climax of the four-year Cultural Olympiad with 12,000 events taking place.

The UK-wide festival pulls together major spectacles and smaller events.

At Thursday's launch event at the Tower of London, festival director Ruth Mackenzie said the festival would "showcase the best in international culture when the eyes of the world are on us this summer".

Free tickets

Embattled culture secretary Jeremy Hunt was also at the launch, and said Britain's arts institutions would be in "the global spotlight as really never before".

He emphasised the range of events on offer, "from Beethoven to Jay-Z; from Shakespeare to Mike Leigh; from Stephen Fry to Wallace and Gromit".

Mr Hunt also made a reference to his current predicament, with claims he broke ministerial rules in his dealings with Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation.

Looking out at the assembled reporters, whose numbers had been boosted by his presence, he remarked: "I'm delighted there is so much media interest in the London 2012 Festival."

However, the minister left the launch before a planned question and answer session.

Nationwide events

French company Les Commandos Percu will perform a music and firework extravaganza - just one of the 12,000 events in the London 2012 Festival

The festival begins on Midsummer's Day, 21 June, and runs through to 9 September - the end of the Paralympic Games.

Organisers are keen to point out that 10 million free tickets are available across the UK.

The latest arrivals on the programme include Playing the Games, a two-week "comedic commentary" on the Games at London's Criterion Theatre, curated by Stephen Fry.

"It's going to be pretty wild," Mackenzie told the BBC. "Stephen has been a huge fan of this Olympics from the bid onwards."

She added: "We always said we'd leave comedy for the end, because comedians aren't so good at telling you two years in advance where they want to be, and they're still not that good which is why we've got pop-up events yet to be announced via the website."

Quirky offerings

Choreographer Elizabeth Streb and her dancers will swoop and catapult around some of London's landmarks

Australian comedian Tim Minchin, who wrote the songs in hit West End show Matilda the Musical, will perform a gig at Cornwall's Eden Project.

Python star Terry Jones and Anne Dudley have created a new children's opera The Owl and the Pussycat that will travel through London's canals.

Meanwhile, Tales of the Riverbank will see a group of comedians travel by canal boat from London to Edinburgh with pop-up performances along the route during July.

Actress Julie Walters, who appears in the BBC's Shakespeare season and the National Theatre's The Last of the Haussmans, said she was "utterly thrilled" to be part of the festival.

But she added with a laugh: "I didn't realise I was until a only a couple of weeks ago!"

Asked if she worried about the costs of the festival, she said: "You can't just cut everything back. The arts are really important. People need their entertainment, they need to be able to look at themselves on all sorts of levels and that's what art does."

The opening day of the festival on 21 June will see Lake Windermere lit up by pyrotechnics, an open-air concert in the shadow of Scotland's Stirling Castle, a Peace One Day Concert hosted by actor Jude Law in Derry/Londonderry and the UK premiere of a choral work in Birmingham.

At the end of the festival, Scottish choreographer Michael Clark has been commissioned to create a large-scale, participatory dance event at Glasgow music venue Barrowlands to mark the handover to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Among the quirkier festival offerings are the world premiere of Stockhausen opera with a string quartet playing live from four helicopters.

There will also be an artwork inspired by the final scene of Michael Caine movie The Italian Job. Richard Wilson's Hang On A Minute Lads, I've Got A Great Idea... will see a full-sized replica coach balanced on the De La Warr pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea.

London 2012 - One extraordinary year

Cloud tower

But not all of the announced works have gone to plan.

Scandinavian Olafur Eliasson's proposed art project Take a Deep Breath was turned down for a £1m grant after the Olympic Lottery Distributor said the piece no longer met its criteria.

The installation would have invited people to inhale and exhale on behalf of "a person, a movement or a cause" and record it on a website in a personal "breath bubble".

Eliasson still appears on the London 2012 Festival programme, with an as-yet-untitled "major new commission" at Tate Modern.

Meanwhile, a question mark hangs over artist Anthony McCall's planned vertical tower of cloud which is set to rise over Merseyside "as far as the eye can see".

The £500,000 publicly-funded artwork - simply called Column - has faced delays due to aircraft safety concerns.

The festival will feature dance company Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch

But Ruth Mackenzie said she was "absolutely confident" that the column of mist would get off the ground after liaison between the Civil Aviation Authority and the local authorities.

Mackenzie also said that a potential boycott by campanologists of a nationwide bell-ringing event to launch the first day of the Olympics had been averted.

Turner Prize-winning artist Martin Creed wants the whole nation to ring whatever bell they have to hand for three minutes at 0800 on 27 July as part of his Work No. 1197 All the Bells.

In November, the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers described the plans as "misconceived" and suggested they might not take part.

But Mackenzie said bellringers were now "all signed up", along with the Royal Navy which would be ringing ships' bells on the day.

The Cultural Olympiad began in 2008, but faced early criticisms that it lacked focus and public recognition.

In 2009-10, Royal Opera House executive Tony Hall and Ruth Mackenzie came on board tasked with turning the Cultural Olympiad around.

Mackenzie said she had been encouraged by a BBC London poll last year that around half of Londoners had heard of the festival. "I think we've already turned the corner on awareness," she said.

The festival, she said, would leave a legacy of art works, and had offered young unemployed people the chance to have their first job in the arts.

"We are hoping that cultural tourism will rise as a result of us showing the world what a brilliant place the UK is to visit," she added.

UNIVERSAL AT 100

Universal Pictures, the Hollywood studio known for classic films such as To Kill a Mockingbird, Jaws, Out of Africa and All Quiet on the Western Front is marking its centenary by restoring and re-releasing some of its best-known titles.

Universal was founded on 30 April 1912 in the US state of New Jersey. The businessman Carl Laemmle, a German immigrant who became known as one of the founding fathers of Hollywood, led a team of entrepreneurs to set up the studio.

It was at a time when film-making was in its infancy and audiences were flocking to small cinema booths in converted storefronts, known as Nickelodeons.

Alfred Hitchcock is just one of the legendary directors to work with Universal "They were really taking advantage of this new phenomenon that was sweeping the country," says Jeff Pirtle, Director of Archives and Collections for NBC Universal.

Universal grew rapidly and the studio eventually moved west to settle in California - encouraged by wall-to-wall sunshine and cheap land - on the site of a former chicken farm.

The studio developed into its own city - the largest film production facility in the world. Today, Universal City, on the edge of Hollywood, is home to a vast complex that incorporates sound stages, archive vaults and a theme park.

"They didn't really set out to create the huge multi-media company that it is today," says Mr Pirtle. "I think it's grown beyond their wildest aspirations."

Over the decades, film-making legends such as Alfred Hitchcock, Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese and Ron Howard, have been associated with Universal.

The studio's centennial celebration sees the culmination of a major restoration programme, with 13 of Universal's best known titles getting a digital makeover for re-release on Blu-ray and DVD.

The films being restored are: All Quiet on the Western Front, The Birds, Buck Privates, Dracula (1931), Dracula Spanish (1931), Frankenstein, Jaws, Schindler's List, Out of Africa, Pillow Talk, Bride of Frankenstein, The Sting and To Kill a Mockingbird.

'Film-maker's vision'

In windowless, high-resolution digital editing suites, deep inside the studio lot, Universal's restoration artists carry out the painstaking task of re-mastering the films, frame by frame.

The aim is to remove blemishes in the images caused by scratches and tears in the original film. The film's colours and sound are also improved.

The Sting starring Robert Redford and Paul Newman was a box office hit 1973 "Our main concern in our restoration process is to maintain the film-maker's vision," says Peter Schade, Vice President of Content Management and Technical Services, Universal Studios.

"We will try to restore and bring the film back to the way it was originally meant to be seen."

Some sections of the original footage of Jaws, one of the films being released on Blu-ray, were badly damaged.

"Obviously I don't think that a film-maker, Steve Spielberg in this case, would want to see a tear in a key frame in his film," says Mr Schade.

It takes up to four hours to work on a single frame of footage. With 24 frames per second, the process is slow. The original negatives are scanned using a very high resolution.

The digital information is then manipulated pixel-by-pixel to eliminate the damaged sections. The end result is a digital version of a classic movie that can be preserved for generations to come.

As film-making technology evolves, there are few certainties about how Hollywood will tell its stories during the next century.

Many believe the death of film is imminent, with the digital world taking over.

"No matter how much computer graphics are involved or how the distribution avenues change, of our productions, inevitably you are still going to need actors and you are still going to need props," says Mr Pirtle, who manages the studio's vast archive of artefacts and costumes.

"Our department is still going to preserve and protect the way that films are made," he adds.

The challenge for Hollywood, as it embraces new technology, is to continue to captivate audiences.

"As long as you have a group of people gathering together in a big room to experience a film together, with that sound in the speakers around you and images up on the screen, laughing or crying or sitting on the edge of your seat, I think that magic is still going to exist," says Mr Pirtle.

M. & A. Alexander Productions / Paramount, 1945, B/W, 98 minutes

Released December, 1945

An entertaining song and dance musical comedy with Betty Hutton playing a wise-cracking nightclub hat-check girl. She unwittingly saves the life of a hobo who is played by Barry Fitzgerald. In reality he is really a cynical elderly millionaire. His expressions of gratitude are less than appreciated by her G.I. beau.

Great movie! Barry Fitzgerald is such a wonderful actor. And, of course, Betty Hutton is loads of fun, too.
