ABBA UNHEARD DEMO TO BE RELEASED

Pop superstars Abba are to release an unheard demo on a deluxe edition of their final album, The Visitors.

The unreleased track, From A Twinkling Star To A Passing Angel, marks the first time the Swedish band have delved into their archives since 1994.

A statement called the track, which was recorded at the peak of Abba's career, a "sensational inclusion".

The Visitors was originally released in 1981, a year before the band split. The new edition comes out in April.

"This is the first time since the Thank You For The Music box set in 1994 that Abba have opened the doors to the tape vaults to release previously unheard music from the group's heyday," a statement said.

The album will also feature bonus selections and a DVD of rare and previously unreleased material from the archives.

REBECCA OF SUNNYBROOK FARM trailer

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm

20th Century-Fox, 1938, B/W, 80 minutes, ***

Released March, 1938

Apparently 20th Century-Fox bought this property for its title only, as it bears little resemblance to the Mary Pickford film (1917) or the Marian Nixon film (1932). All that aside, it's an enjoyable entry from America's favorite little moppet.

When orphaned Rebecca's (Shirley Temple) uncle Henry Kipper (William Demarest) fails to launch Rebecca as a child radio star, he takes her to live with her aunt (Helen Westley) on Sunnybrook farm. And who should live next door but radio producer Anthony Kent (Randolph Scott)? Of course, Kent finds a way to get Rebecca on the air, but when Kipper hears the program he wants Rebecca back, and a family feud erupts!

Breach of new EU online data rules to carry high fines

Europe proposed strict new data privacy rules on Wednesday, putting greater responsibility on companies such as Facebook to protect users' information, and threatening those who breach the code with hefty fines. But the move, which legislators say is designed to better defend children against predators, has rattled major technology and Internet-based companies, with executives concerned the legislation will be almost impossible to implement in full or will do serious damage to their business models.
The proposals, which are expected to become law by the end of 2013 if approved by all 27 EU member states and the European Parliament, were drawn up after a two-year examination of shifting Internet use and the behavior of consumers using sites such as Yahoo!, Google and Facebook. Viviane Reding, the European commissioner in charge of data privacy, said the proposed laws were necessary if consumers' data and privacy were to be better protected in the modern age.
A breach of the rules could mean fines of up to two percent of a company's annual turnover, which in the case of Google could mean up to USD 800m.

AGUILERA AT ETTA JAMES FUNERAL/'At last'

THE FUNERAL OF ETTA JAMES

Hundreds of mourners gathered to pay their last respects to Etta James as the R&B legend was buried yesterday in Los Angeles.

The service was held at Greater Bethany Community Church City of Refuge in Gardena. A widely-attended public viewing took place on Friday at the Inglewood Cemetery Mortuary, where fans waited for hours to bid farewell to the singer, who died on January 20 at the age of 73.

The Reverend Al Sharpton presided over the funeral, opening by delivering a message from President Barack Obama, who famously danced with the First Lady to James’ song "At Last" during his first inaugural ball.

"Etta will be remembered for her legendary voice and her contributions to our nation's musical heritage," Obama's statement read. "I know she will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved her."

Stevie Wonder performed with a church choir, singing "Shelter in the Rain," "The Lord's Prayer," and playing a harmonica solo.

"Out of all the singers that I've ever heard, she was the one that cut right to my soul and spoke to me," Christina Aguilera told the audience, before singing "At Last."

U.S. Rep Maxine Waters was also there to offer some words of remembrance.

"Etta is special to me and for me, because she represents the life, the triumphs, the tribulations of a lot of black women all over this world," Waters said. "It does not matter who sang 'At Last' before or after Etta. It does not matter when it was sung, or where it was sung. 'At Last' was branded by Etta, the raunchy diva – that's her signature and we will always remember her."

In his eulogy, Sharpton described James’ incredible rise from poverty and addiction.

"The genius of Etta James is she flipped the script," Sharpton said, and praised her for helping break down racial barriers through her music. "She was able to get us on the same rhythms and humming the same ballads and understanding each other's melodies way before we could even use the same hotels.”

"At last, you can find peace now!” Sharpton concluded. “At last, you can get the gratitude of the savior now. Etta, you made it, you're going home. At last! At last! At last!"

Composer Clare Fischer dies at 83

US jazz composer, arranger and pianist Clare Fischer has died, aged 83.

The Grammy winner had been on life support earlier this month after suffering a cardiac arrest following minor surgery.

Fischer received his 11th Grammy nomination at this year's awards, for best instrumental arrangement for his track In the Beginning.

Starting out in jazz, he went on to create arrangements for pop stars including Prince and Michael Jackson.

Born on 22 October 1928 in Durand, Michigan, Fischer worked with jazz legends such as Donald Byrd and Dizzy Gillespie.

In 1975 he found a new direction in Latin-American music and started his own group, Salsa Picante.

The group's record 2+2 won Fischer his first Grammy in 1981, and again in 1986 for Free Fall.

He also took on orchestral arrangements for the Chaka Khan-led group Rufus, as his nephew was the drummer.

"Apparently the arrangements I made for their early records were appreciated, for in the following years I was hired almost exclusively by black artists," he told Artist Interviews.

Brent Fischer (left), who is also a composer and arranger, worked on his father's latest album Once he was established as an arranger in the R&B field, Fischer became the "go-to-guy" for arranging pop albums and was hired by artists including Paul McCartney, Celine Dion and Robert Palmer.

A multi-instrumentalist, Fischer also received an honorary doctorate from Michigan State University in 1999 for his outstanding contributions to the field of jazz.

He recorded more than 45 albums and has arranged, composed or played on more than 100 other artists' records.

He is survived by his wife Donna, and children Brent, Lee and Tahlia.

QUADROPHENIA trailer

Quadrophenia

Quadrophenia

Who Films / World Northal, 1979, Color, 114 minutes

USA release November, 1979

The English seaside resort of Brighton in the early 1960s is the setting for a showdown between rival teen factions--the sharp-suited, scooter-riding Mods and the leather-clad Rockers--in this cult fave drama filled with vintage rock oldies and Who songs from the concept album that inspired it. Starring Phil Daniels, Mark Wingett, Leslie Ash and Sting as Ace Face.

Quadrophenia isn't really a musical at all. It is included here because of the amount of music on the soundtrack (lots!) and because the film is based on the concept album of the same name released by The Who in 1973. Excerpts from the concept album are used on the film soundtrack as well as other big hits of the mid-1960s. The album and the film triggered a major following with Who concert tours, fan clubs and memorabilia.

The film is a sort of coming-of-age drama revolving around Jimmy Cooper, a young man in London during the mid-1960s. He is caught up in the "counter culture" generation - a drug user, party-hound, a member of the "Mods" motorscooter-borne club whose arch-enemies are the Rockers -- black leather jackets and Harleys. There is parent trouble, girl trouble, boss trouble, fights with the Rockers, a rumble at Brighton... Life is just too much trouble!

The only music performed on-screen is a glimpse of Cross Section singing "Hi-Heel Sneakers" (an old funk standard) and some footage of a Who concert on the classic TV show, "Ready, Steady, Go!" It is an interesting film and entertaining, if somewhat tragic. But it does give a far more realistic view of the era than most movies made two or three decades later, and employs some real rock classics on the soundtrack.
