NEW HOME FOR SUSAN BOYLE

Susan Boyle has gone shopping for a birthday present -- for herself.

The singing sensation, who turns 49 on April 1, has just received her first major royalty check of $6 million, and she's ready to spend some of it.

Boyle has made an offer on a newly built house near her home in Blackburn, Scotland. The property backs onto a small river, reportedly has five bedrooms, and was on the market for £300,000 (about $447,000).

Her spokeswoman had no comment.

If the sale goes through, it will be a big step up for Boyle: Despite her success since coming in second on Britain's Got Talent, she has continued to live in public housing. (She had shared her home with her mother, who died in 2007.)

Becoming a celebrity has exposed the singer to security issues, including a January break-in. A 16-year-old was arrested following the incident.

While Boyle has not yet been able to enjoy the riches brought by her album "I Dreamed A Dream," which has sold 8 million copies, she has not been left strapped for cash, a source says.

"Susan has wanted for nothing financially and [mentor] Simon Cowell has been making sure of that," reveals the source.

For now, the potential home-buyer will spend some time in hotels: On her birthday, Boyle will be in Tokyo, performing as a special guest with the Yomiuri Nippon Orchestra. Later in the month, she'll head to Australia for their equivalent of the Emmy awards
