SUPERMAN COMES BACK WITH A NEW DIRECTOR

For his next movie, Zack Snyder will once again take to the skies – not with owls, but with one of the most recognizable and enduring heroes in comic books: Superman.

On Monday, Warner Brothers said that Mr. Snyder was in negotiations to direct a new Superman movie for the studio that is planned for release at the end of 2012. Though Mr. Snyder is best known for darkly stylish, high-adrenaline action movies like “300″ and “Watchmen,” both adapted from popular graphic novels, his most recent film is the animated feature “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole,” which has grossed about $30 million domestically over 10 days of release. Mr. Snyder is currently working on “Sucker Punch,” an action movie focusing on an ensemble of fetishized females, which is planned for release next year.

Warner Brothers said that David S. Goyer, a screenwriter of “Batman Begins,” will write the script for the new Superman film, and that Christopher Nolan, the “Inception” and “Dark Knight” director, will produce the movie with his wife and producing partner, Emma Thomas, as well as Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder, Mr. Snyder’s wife and producing partner.

Inspired by the “Superman” movies that starred Christopher Reeve as Clark Kent and the titular Man of Steel, the director Bryan Singer tried to revive the franchise with a 2006 film, “Superman Returns,” that starred Brandon Routh. Though that movie sold more than $391 million in tickets worldwide, it did not generate the same enthusiasm (or revenue) as, say, Mr. Nolan’s Batman movies.

No casting was announced for Mr. Snyder’s Superman film, but if you’re a male between the ages of 20 and 30 with the power to leap tall buildings in a single bound, call your agent.
