ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY
On April 12, 1955, the polio vaccine, developed by Dr. Jonas Salk, is declared safe and effective. The vaccine comes at a time when polio is one of Americans’ greatest fears. Just three years earlier, the US experienced its worst outbreak ever. Nearly 58,000 cases of polio were reported that year, with 3,145 dying and 21,269 — mostly children — left with some form of paralysis. (Mimi Meade, 7, is inoculated with the new Salk vaccine during a countrywide test on April 26, 1954.)
VIDEO: Surgery to remove a brain tumor robbed Gweneviere Mann of her short-term memory. She is adjusting to her new life, which means writing notes to herself to remember things as simple as whether or not she’s eaten lunch. But losing her past hasn’t stopped Mann from setting new goals or making fresh memories.
As he makes the transition from spy chief to top diplomat, CIA Director Mike Pompeo appeared before Congress today. The former 3-term congressman from the Midwestern state of Kansas has a reputation for being both energetic and, at times, polarizing, and is known for his tough views on terrorism, torture and Iran. And while Pompeo initially won praise from the intelligence community, he has also alienated some of those under his command.
An American city that takes pride in being weird is the best place to live in the United States, according to an annual survey. Affordability, the employment market and quality of life are all considered when making the selection. The top-ranked city is a place where citizens feel the most fulfilled socially, physically and financially.
VIDEO EXPLAINER: Hundreds of US National Guardsmen are mobilizing at the US-Mexico border following a directive from President Trump. Who controls these reserve military units and what do they do?
President Trump and a perceived lack of positive engagement with Africa was a topic of discussion during a week-long trip to four African countries undertaken by five US senators to show America’s commitment to the continent. The US has no ambassadors to 15 African countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt and South Africa — diplomatic vacancies that could pose significant challenges for the US given Africa’s fast-changing political landscape.
