ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY | |
|
On April 12, 1955, the polio vaccine, developed by Dr. Jonas Salk, is declared safe and effective. The vaccine comes at a time when polio is one of Americans’ greatest fears. Just three years earlier, the US experienced its worst outbreak ever. Nearly 58,000 cases of polio were reported that year, with 3,145 dying and 21,269 — mostly children — left with some form of paralysis. (Mimi Meade, 7, is inoculated with the new Salk vaccine during a countrywide test on April 26, 1954.) |
