American Idol Comes To An End (The First Time)

2016
After 15 years of memorable performances, cringeworthy auditions, and shocking eliminations, the American Idolstage finally goes dark, but not before one more winner is crowned: Trent Harmon.

Harmon's surprise win against fellow Mississippian powerhouse (and fan favorite) La'Porsha Renae is almost overshadowed by Idol's grand farewell. The two-hour-plus extravaganza includes solo and group performances from past winners and also-rans such as Carrie UnderwoodDavid CookRuben StuddardTaylor HicksFantasiaJennifer HudsonJordin Sparks, and a medley of hits from Season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson. Even judges Keith UrbanHarry Connick, Jr. and Jennifer Lopez get in on the action, with Lopez performing her latest single, "Ain't Your Mama." Perhaps the most memorable guest of the evening, however, is notoriously acerbic former judge Simon Cowell who admits, "I'm feeling quite emotional now."

The show lies dormant for just two years: In 2018, ABC revives the show, launching Season 16 with Lionel Richie, Katy Perry and Luke Bryan as judges.
