Michael Jackson Marries Elvis' Daughter

1994
Michael Jackson marries Lisa Marie Presley, the child of Elvis, in a secret ceremony held in the Dominican Republic. The couple divorce 20 months later, citing irreconcilable differences.

The news of Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley's marriage is the latest in a long line of shocking headlines surrounding the King of Pop. While embroiled in his first sexual abuse scandal that erupted the previous summer, regarding 13-year-old Jordan Chandler, Jackson turned to Lisa Marie for support. Having met occasionally as kids, the two reconnected as adults and became fast friends. Believing wholeheartedly in his innocence, she sticks close to his side and a romance blossoms. She is still legally married to first husband, musician Danny Keough, when Jackson proposes to her over the phone in the fall of 1993. The wedding is a quickie, no frills civil ceremony that is sealed with a kiss on the cheek – a precursor to the awkward lip-lock they share onstage at the MTV Video Music Awards a few months later.

The tabloids aren't buying the nuptials, claiming the whole marriage is a publicity ploy to clean-up Jackson's tarnished image and promote his forthcoming HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I album. Indeed Lisa Marie, who begrudgingly appears topless alongside her husband in the video for "You Are Not Alone," feels like a cog in the Jackson machine. She files for divorce in 1996.
