On January 11, 1908, U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt declares the Grand Canyon a national monument. Native Americans lived in the canyon and surrounding areas for centuries, and the first Europeans to see the canyon were Spanish explorers who arrived in 1540. However, it wasn’t until 1869 that the canyon was fully explored when geologist John Wesley Powell led 10 men down the Colorado River, seeing the full 466-kilometer long gorge. Today, more than 5 million people a year visit the Grand Canyon. |
