On Jan. 14, 1943, President Franklin D. Roosevelt arrives in Casablanca, French North Africa (now Morocco), and becomes the first sitting president to travel on official business by airplane. The long trip via a Boeing 314 Flying Boat named the Dixie Clipper, began on Jan. 11 and required several stops for refueling. Officials determined flying was safer than a ship as German U-boats were wreaking havoc on North Atlantic shipping. At Casablanca, Roosevelt met with British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and agreed to demand unconditional surrender of the Axis powers. |
