VIDEO: Many schools throughout the United States are shut down due to the coronavirus outbreak, with some starting online classes to keep kids learning. VOA met a family in the state of Maryland trying to adapt to this new routine, as schools there will remain closed until at least April 24.
ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY
On April 14, 1865, John Wilkes Booth shoots President Abraham Lincoln in the back of the head as the president watched a play at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C. After shooting Lincoln, Booth shouted, “Sic semper tyrannis! (Ever thus to tyrants!) The South is avenged,” and then jumped onto the stage, breaking his leg. Despite the injury, he was able to flee Washington. The mortally wounded Lincoln died the next day. On April 26, Booth, who was hiding on a Virginia farm, was killed.
