ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY
On Jan. 30, 1835, President Andrew Jackson survives an assassination attempt—the first attempt on a U.S. president. The would-be assassin was Richard Lawrence, an unemployed house painter who was likely mentally ill. Lawrence approached Jackson after a funeral in the House of Representatives with the intention of shooting him. The gun misfired, and the 67-year-old president clubbed Lawrence several times with a cane. During the scuffle, Lawrence attempted to shoot a second gun, but it also misfired.
The European Parliament gave the green light for Britain’s departure from the European Union Wednesday evening, hours before Brexit becomes reality. The vote was overwhelming, 621 to 49, but it was an emotional departure.
U.S. defense officials believe they have unmasked the Islamic State terror group’s current leader, until now known by his nom de guerre, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi.
A young Uighur woman in Boston is harnessing the power of social media to raise awareness to the plight of Uighurs in China’s Xinjiang region, including her father who has been held in a so-called Chinese re-education camp for two years.
The United States could be a mediator in talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians, a senior U.S. official said a day after President Donald Trump unveiled a detailed Middle East peace plan.
