The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences has announced an initial field of 63 songs eligible in the original song category of the 82nd Academy Awards.
To qualify in the category, tunes must be penned specifically for a picture. Maximum of two songs may be nominated for any single pic.
On Jan. 12, AMPAS will screen clips featuring each first-round song, randomly ordered, for its music branch. Mail-in balloting will follow.
Initial field includes tunes up for other kudos. In the running for best original song at the Golden Globes are Maury Yeston's "Cinema Italiano" (from "Nine"), Paul McCartney's "I Want to Come Home" ("Everybody's Fine"), James Horner, Simon Franglen and Kuk Harrell's "I Will See You" ("Avatar"), Ryan Bingham and T-Bone Burnett's "The Weary Kind" ("Crazy Heart") and U2's "Winter" ("Brothers").
Karen O and Nick Zinner's "All Is Love," from "Where the Wild Things Are," is up for the 2010 Grammy Award for best original song for film, TV or other visual media; the number replaced the disqualified "The Climb," from "Hannah Montana: The Movie."
Original song Oscar nominees are determined by an averaged point system vote. If no song receives a score of 8.25 or above, there will be no nominees in the category; if only one song achieves that score, it and the song receiving the next highest score will be nominees.
