On March 8, 1965, two battalions of United States Marines land in Da Nang, South Vietnam, as the U.S. sends its first combat troops to the war-torn country. The Marines were tasked with protecting a large air base, but by the end of the month, there were over 5,000 Marines in country. By 1968, there were nearly 550,000 American troops in Vietnam. By the time the U.S. completely withdrew in 1973, over 58,000 Americans had died in the war. |
