Saying Goodbye to Jane the Virgin
All good things must come to an end—but Gina Rodriguez, the star of Jane the Virgin, is not saying goodbye to her Golden Globe-winning character just yet. Though Jane is about to begin its final season on the CW, the network has already greenlit a spin-off: Jane the Novela, a series of telenovelas based on novels written in-universe by Jane herself. “I’m really super stoked about it, because it’s seldom that you get to hang on to a character after it’s done,” the actress told Laura Bradleyin an interview that previews the show’s final run of episodes—and the future of Jane. The follow-up show, Rodriguez joked, might as well be called Jane the Afterlife, “because it’s like, I can’t let go of Jane.” Then again, why would she? “Jane is the love of my life,” Rodriguez explained. “The truth is that I am a raw nerve. My tears are very real and very present. I’m very expressive. It’s just such a hard thing to, to express what Jane has done, not only for me and my career and making my dreams come true, which could be enough because it’s absolutely everything.” No wonder she was not exactly eager to bid this character—or this universe—farewell.
Elsewhere in HWD, Joe Pompeo explores the landscape at MSNBC now that the Mueller report is out of the bag; Joanna Robinson previews a very special episode of The Magicians, this time with more Whitesnake; Joy Press chats with TV mainstay Natalie Morales about her new Mike Schur sitcom; and Richard Lawson reviews the elephant in the room: Disney’s new take on Dumbo.
