On March 29, 1974, the Mariner 10 probe makes its first flyby of the planet Mercury. Launched in November of 1973, the probe also passed Venus on its way to the closest planet to the sun. Images sent back from the spaceship showed Mercury’s surface to be similar to the moon. Moreover, it found that Mercury rotates, albeit slowly with one day lasting 58 days on Earth. It also discovered a slight atmosphere on the planet and determined the temperatures on the planet ranged from −183 °C (−297 °F) during the night to 187 °C (369 °F) during the day.
Local elections in Turkey will be held Sunday. As voters head to the polls, they will be deciding on leadership positions in 81 provinces. Reporters from VOA’s Turkish Service and Kurdish Service talked to locals in different parts of the country.
