ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY On March 29, 1974, the Mariner 10 probe makes its first flyby of the planet Mercury. Launched in November of 1973, the probe also passed Venus on its way to the closest planet to the sun. Images sent back from the spaceship showed Mercury’s surface to be similar to the moon. Moreover, it found that Mercury rotates, albeit slowly with one day lasting 58 days on Earth. It also discovered a slight atmosphere on the planet and determined the temperatures on the planet ranged from −183 °C (−297 °F) during the night to 187 °C (369 °F) during the day.
