U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron praised veterans and highlighted the spirit of cooperation among Allied nations as they commemorated the 75th anniversary of the D-Day offensive that led to the defeat of the Nazis and the eventual end of World War II.
ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY
On June 6, 1944, Allied forces storm the beaches at Normandy, France, taking a major step to free Europe from the Nazis. Before the D-Day landings, some 13,000 British and American paratroopers had already touched down behind enemy lines, and by the end of the day, some 150,000 soldiers had landed in France. During Operation Overlord, which remains the largest amphibious operation in history, the Allies suffered about 10,000 casualties, including over 4,400 who made the ultimate sacrifice. World War II was over less than a year after D-Day.
