Former U.S. Vice President Joe Biden was at center stage Thursday on the second night of Democratic presidential debates, but one of his main challengers, Sen. Kamala Harris, sharply questioned his relations with segregationist lawmakers four decades ago and his opposition to forced school busing to integrate schools.

On June 28, 1939, Pan American (Pan Am) launches the first transatlantic passenger service between New York and Marseilles, France. The plane used for the service was the B-314 “Yankee Clipper” seaplane the largest plane ever built until the Boeing 747 flew three decades later. The double-decker plane could hold 74 passengers and had a range of 3,500 miles. The accommodations were first class, and the seats could be converted to beds, as the flights took as long as 29 hours. The cost of a one-way trip was $375. Pan Am launched passenger service between New York and Southampton, England on July 8, 1939.
