The story of a murderous great white shark terrorizing the small town of Amity was an instant commercial and critical success and was a breakthrough for a 27-year-old director, Steven Spielberg. The film, which was based on a 1973 book by Peter Benchley, was the highest ever grossing at the box office until it was unseated by 1977′s Star Wars . Jaws , which starred Roy Scheider and Richard Dreyfuss, was nominated for Best Picture, but took home Academy Awards for Best Film Editing, Best Original Score and Best Sound. Three sequels were made, but none of them had the success of the original Jaws.
