So how did Shailene Woodley gear up for this gut-wrenching reveal? By not thinking too hard about it, the actor told Yohana Desta. “Intense scenes like that, those are the scenes I prepare the least for,” Woodley said. “I really just go into it with my lines memorized. Sometimes I memorize lines for scenes the morning of, so it’s fresh in my brain, and then I just immediately surrender to what can happen. A script can tell you all day long to cry…[but] to be honest, I didn’t know I was going to be that emotional until I walked into that room and saw Iain’s face.” During their chat, Woodley also talked a bit more broadly about her character’s journey in the second season of HBO’s smash-hit drama, lavishing praise on her young costar Iain Armitage and director Andrea Arnold (who took the reins this season from Jean-Marc Vallée): “Andrea’s so present in her own emotion that if she’s genuinely really touched by something, she’ll start sobbing on set.
