On March 19, 1931, Nevada legalizes gambling. The move came as the state faced a steep economic downturn due to the Great Depression and a decline in a once-thriving mining industry. Initially, gambling attracted organized crime, with noted mobster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, becoming a driving force behind the development of Las Vegas’ famous strip. Today, gambling makes up the vast majority of the state’s tax income, and Las Vegas is a globally popular tourist attraction, offering gambling, nightclubs, concerts and sporting events.
A student-run stock exchange that exists online and in the classroom is among a number of simulated companies being formed in high schools across the United States. The exchange is a virtual enterprise that teaches the complexities of business and the latest technology behind the financial markets.

Adolescents reporting symptoms of major depression increased 52 percent between 2005 and 2017 — from 8.7 percent to 13.2 percent — among youth from the ages of 12 and 17. The increase was even higher — 63 percent from 2009 to 2017 — among young adults between the ages of 18 and 25.
