De La Soul Debut With 3 Feet High and Rising
1989
De La Soul release their debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising. The sample-heavy, paisley-powered LP becomes a hip-hop landmark, establishing a mellow, groovy new style.
The trio - Posdnuos (Kelvin Mercer), Pasemaster Mase (Vincent Mason) and Trugoy the Dove (David Jolicoeur) - are from Amityville in Long Island, New York, not exactly a hip-hop hotspot. Instead of bellicose brags or comedic capers, they take it slow and easy, a style they call the D.A.I.S.Y. Age (DA Inner Sound, Y'all).
None of the many samples on the album were cleared, as the practice is still new. This plunges the group into hot water when The Turtles sue over the sample of "You Showed Me" that appears throughout the track "Transmitting Live from Mars." The suit, which is eventually settled, puts the kibosh on uncleared samples.
