Jamie Foxx Wins An Oscar For Ray

2005
Jamie Foxx wins a Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the movie Ray.
Directed by Taylor Hackford, Ray is a biographical drama about R&B legend Ray Charles and chronicles his childhood in Florida, during which he became completely blind by age seven, and his rise to fame during the '50s and '60s with songs like "I Got A Woman," "Georgia On My Mind," and "Hit The Road Jack."

Comedian-turned-dramatic actor Jamie Foxx embodied the role by studying Ray's mannerisms, attending classes at the Braille Institute, and wearing special eye prosthetics that would essentially render him blind for up to 14 hours a day. He already knew how to play the piano, but spent hours mimicking Ray's fingering technique. The only thing he didn't do was sing: That was all Ray. The 73-year-old performer encouraged the filmmakers to portray him honestly, as a flawed man who struggled with heroin addiction and had a penchant for womanizing. He was able to attend the screening for the first edit of the film, but died of liver failure two months before the premiere.

All of Foxx's hard work pays off at the 77th Academy Awards, where he wins Best Actor over nominees Leonardo DiCaprio, Don Cheadle, Johnny Depp, and Clint Eastwood. (Foxx is also nominated as Best Supporting Actor for the crime thriller Collateral, but loses to Morgan Freeman for Million Dollar Baby.)
