On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivers his famous “Gettysburg Address” during a dedication of the military cemetery in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The speech came about four months after the infamous battle there, which saw over 45,000 casualties–the bloodiest battle of the Civil War. The battle, which was won by the Union, is widely seen as the beginning of the end for the Confederacy. Lincoln’s speech was short, consisting of just 272 words, but it is considered one of the greatest speeches in American history as it reminded people of the principles upon which the country was founded and the need to continue fighting in order to win the Civil War. |
