Grammy Hall of Fame

California Girls by the Beach Boys has become one of 25 new songs to be inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

The 1965 hit is joined by jazz classics by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, and Dippermouth Blues, a 1923 recording featuring a young Armstrong on cornet.

Birdland by Weather Report, from 1977, is the most recent of the inductees, which have to be at least 25 years old.

The recordings "all greatly deserve to be memorialised", said Neil Portnow, president of The Recording Academy.

"The selections are timeless staples that span six decades and represent a wide range of genres from comedy to rock, reggae, jazz and R&B," he added.

Bob Marley's Catch A Fire album is also on the list
Another well-known track to join the list is Riders On The Storm by The Doors, which was released in 1971, along with Janis Joplin's Pearl from the same year.

Bob Marley and the Wailers' album Catch A Fire is also among the newly listed tunes, along with The Isley Brothers' Twist and Shout.

Other songs from the golden era of film and jazz are in the list, including Judy Garland and Gene Kelly's For Me and My Gal, and Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah by Johnny Mercer, recorded in 1946.

Even comedy gets a look in, with the inclusion of the late George Carlin's Class Clown - the 1972 album which featured his infamous "seven words you can never say on television" routine.

The Grammy Hall of Fame now constitutes 851 recordings.

The entire list, along with the recordings, are displayed in the Grammy museum in Los Angeles.
