On May 13, 1607, about 100 English colonists land on the west bank of the James River in Virginia and establish the first permanent English settlement in North America. The settlement, called Jamestown as it was named after then King James I, was nearly wiped out several times due to starvation, frigid winters and fighting with Native Americans. Despite the hardships, new settlers kept coming, and by 1612, colonists were growing tobacco as a cash crop. By 1630, over a million and a half pounds of tobacco were being exported from Jamestown every year. |
