VIDEO: Guy Gilchrist is an American cartoonist, country musician, animator and songwriter perhaps most well known for his “Nancy” comic strip and his work on the Muppets. VOA sat down with Gilchrist to talk about his career.
ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY
On May 2, 2011, U.S. Navy SEALs gun down Osama bin Laden in a nighttime raid at his hideout in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The Al Qaeda leader had been on the run since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Twenty-three SEALs took part in “Operation Neptune Spear,” which lasted about 40 minutes. None of them were injured. Bin Laden’s body was identified and later dumped in the Arabian Sea. Members of the Obama administration watched the raid live via a drone that filmed the mission.
As the United States and the Taliban begin a new round of negotiations in an effort to move the peace process forward, a senior U.S. military commander says no decision has been made about the presence of U.S.-led NATO forces in Afghanistan.
Once-hidden Russian-Iranian disagreements over Syria are starting to surface. Moscow and Tehran are jostling to wield the most influence over the government of President Bashar al-Assad, adding further complexity to the still-far-from-complete endgame of Syria’s brutal civil war, say diplomats and analysts.
The recent suicides of three people connected to school shootings have drawn attention to the other victims of mass attacks — people who survive the initial traumatic experience only to take their own lives later.
VIDEO: In India, 85 million young voters have joined the electoral rolls in this year’s general election, which wraps up May 19. It is a fiercely fought contest between Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, the main opposition Congress Party and an array of smaller, regional parties. VOA met millennials in one of the country’s premier universities to find that they want Indian politicians to focus on creating better opportunities, and improving governance and development.
