VIDEO: Did you know you could spend a month at a historic ranch as a volunteer? It’s the Hells River Volunteering Program offered by the U.S. Forest Service in the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area in Washington state. It’s one of the most beautiful areas in the U.S., and they’re always accepting applications. Just remember to stock up on food and be ready to live without a cell phone. VOA traveled to Hells Canyon to talk with volunteers living at the ranch.
ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY
On May 6, 2004, over 51 million Americans tune into the last episode of the sitcom, Friends . The wildly popular show centered on six young people and their lives in New York City. The cast featured several unknown actors — among them Jennifer Aniston, Matthew Perry and Kudrow – who became household names. The show won six Emmy Awards during its 10-year run, and it is still aired in syndication in nearly 100 countries.
VIDEO: It’s very unlikely that anyone would willingly walk into a bar named the KGB, but writers and book lovers in New York do it all the time. VOA visited what is actually a lively literary venue and talked to its owner about its peculiar history.
Pope Francis has arrived in Sofia at the start of three days in the former communist states of Bulgaria and North Macedonia, his fourth trip abroad this year. Both countries have tiny Catholic minorities and most of the population considers themselves Orthodox. The pope is likely to use this opportunity to help cement the Vatican’s relations with the Orthodox community in Eastern Europe.
VIDEO: New party animals in Los Angeles are literally, well, animals. Parties with dwarf goats are quickly gaining popularity in the City of Angels. VOA crashed one such party to see what it is like to hang out with goats.
VIDEO: Rivers are a source of irrigation, drinking water, recreation and flooding. Here in the United States, scientists are looking at ways to lessen the impact of flooding with technology, including drones, supercomputers and sonar. They are even working to predict and prevent floods.
