Twice a year, Americans change their clocks in accordance with the federally mandated switch to daylight saving time (DST), a concept first introduced during World War I in order to save energy by maximizing sunlight. But one Colorado technology entrepreneur wants to remain on DST year-round and runs a website dedicated to achieving that goal.
ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY
On May 10, 1869, the transcontinental railroad is completed. To celebrate the accomplishment, the presidents of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads met in Promontory, Utah, to drive in the ceremonial last, “golden,” spike of the railroad. The 1,868-mile route connected Omaha, Nebraska and Oakland Long Wharf at San Francisco Bay. Construction began in 1863, as crews from the east and west began working toward each other, often enduring harsh working conditions.
U.S. President Donald Trump began Friday issuing a series of tweets focusing on trade with China, as the United States increased tariffs from 10% to 25% on $200 billion worth of Chinese imports.
The hope for press freedom has long been an elusive aspiration in China, and the outlook has become increasingly dire under the tight rule of Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
VIDEO: Russia on May 9 marked one of its most important holidays, Victory Day over Nazi Germany in World War II. The Soviet Union, which included Russia, suffered the biggest losses, with 26 million Soviet citizens killed in the conflict. At V-Day commemorations, victims are honored and the military presents a display meant show enemies its strength. Many also recall the time Russia and the United States fought on the same side against a common enemy.
VIDEO: In India, independent watchdogs have long raised questions over the costs of India’s elections. Surveys put the 2019 election bill at a record $8 billion. The watchdogs say that much of the political financing is not transparent and have called for greater reliance on small donors. The country’s first political crowdfunding platform is making a start by helping some candidates raise funds in a transparent manner.
