On May 10, 1869, the transcontinental railroad is completed. To celebrate the accomplishment, the presidents of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads met in Promontory, Utah, to drive in the ceremonial last, “golden,” spike of the railroad. The 1,868-mile route connected Omaha, Nebraska and Oakland Long Wharf at San Francisco Bay. Construction began in 1863, as crews from the east and west began working toward each other, often enduring harsh working conditions. |
