On May 15, 1800, President John Adams officially calls for the nation’s capital to be moved to Washington, DC, from Philadelphia. He called for the government to be up and running by June 15, 1800. Philadelphia stopped being the capital on June 11, 1800. Moving the government was not as big a task as one would imagine, as the entire federal workforce was made up of just 125 people. Adams and his wife, Abigail, moved into the White House in November. |
