ABC’s One-Night-Only Norman Lear Revival
How do All in the Family and The Jeffersons play in 2019—decades after they first delighted audiences by tackling some of the thorniest issues in American life with wit and humor? Well, according to Laura Bradley, these shows are just as incisive and enjoyable as ever—as proven Wednesday night, when ABC aired an ambitious and curious experiment called Live in Front of a Studio Audience: Norman Lear’s “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons.” Hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Norman Learhimself, who developed both classic sitcoms, M.C.’d the special, which gathered an all-star cast of Oscar winners and TV mainstays—including Woody Harrelson, Marisa Tomei, Jamie Foxx, Ellie Kemper, Ike Barinholtz, Wanda Sykes, and Jennifer Hudson—to re-create a pair of episodes verbatim, using the very same scripts and meticulous re-creations of the Jefferson and Bunker homes. The result, Bradley writes, was “a love letter to television as a medium—and one of its most talented auteurs.” Come to watch Foxx flub a line live on-air; stay for Hudson’s stirring rendition of the Jeffersons theme song, “Movin’ on Up,” and a surprise turn from original Jeffersons star Marla Gibbs—still spry and sharp at 87 years old.
