Hanging Out with Desus, Mero, and Seth Meyers
There was a time, not too long ago, when late night was the most cutthroat genre in television. (Think the endless David Letterman versus Jay Leno, wars, or the Leno/Conan O’Brien debacle of 2010, or Johnny Carson reportedly hobbling Joan Rivers’s Fox show out of spite.) But now, as V.F. late-night expert Laura Bradley writes, “a new spirit of bonhomie seems to have taken over the airwaves—and, more importantly, these comedians’ mutual respect suggests the future of the format as a home for many distinct voices.“ For proof, look no further than this conversation between Seth Meyers,Desus Nice, and The Kid Mero, who have all won legions of fans by hosting a pair of very different after-hours programs. Their banter is easy and engaging, particularly when talk turns to the upcoming Emmy nominations: “Put it this way,” Desus told Bradley, “Six years ago, we were working really shitty office jobs—and now we could possibly get an Emmy? We’ve pretty much leveled up. . . It’s not even about getting the Emmy. It’s about going to the awards ceremony and just smelling like weed and making everyone uncomfortable.” Then Meyers declared his true feelings about a potential nod: “I guess that means my answer is, I want to be nominated if Desus and Mero are also nominated.”
Elsewhere in HWD, contributor Michele Wojciechowskicatches up with Norman Lear and Woody Harrelsonahead of the debut of their one-night-only All in the Familyrevival; Peter Savodnik surveys which Democratic 2020 candidates have the strongest hold on Hollywood; Sonia Saraiya pinpoints what bugged her about the Game of Thrones finale; and as one HBO flagship winds down, we look back to what happened when another of the network’s signature series signed off the air mid-scene.
