A Final Farewell to Game of Thrones
Game over. After eight seasons, dozens of gruesomely memorable death scenes, and countless think pieces, HBO’s flagship fantasy epic has finally come to an end—though we can probably expect its predictably polarizing finale to spur further conversation for days, weeks, and years to come. V.F.’s Joanna Robinson has been on the front lines of Thrones coverage since the very beginning; here, she reminisces about how the show changed both the course of her career and television more generally, an outcome hardly anybody could have anticipated. “Game of Thrones has broken Emmy records, ratings records, and, in its final days, engulfed the Internet in scorching takes about the show’s last six episodes. In the meantime, it has irrevocably changed countless lives, including mine,” she writes. “But as the divisive final episodes threaten the legacy of one of the biggest stories in the world, it’s worth remembering that, originally, the ambitions for everyone involved were much smaller. Like Daenerys’s baby dragons, Thrones grew into something too big, too powerful, and, for many of us, too hot to handle.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Yohana Desta recounts how the cast of Thrones said goodbye to TV’s biggest show; Richard Lawson and Julie Miller bring you inside V.F.’s exclusive Cannes party; Lawson reviews one of the French fest’s most anticipated offerings, The Lighthouse, starring Robert Pattinson; and HBO hopes that a splashy new trailer will stoke anticipation for another genre epic: the return of Westworld.
