Chris Cornell Dies At 52

2017
After performing with Soundgarden in Detroit, Chris Cornell is found dead from an apparent suicide at the age of 52.

Darkness is a hallmark of Cornell's songwriting, apparent on tracks like "Blow Up The Outside World," "Outshined" and "Black Hole Sun." The Superunknown track "Fell On Black Days" deals with his depression, which was especially acute in his teenage years:

Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile
Sunspots have faded and now I'm doing time

The last song he performed was the 1991 Soundgarden song "Slaves And Bulldozers," where he incorporated some of the Led Zeppelin song "In My Time Of Dying."

After the show - to an audience of 5,000 at the Fox Theater - Cornell went to his hotel room, where according to the medical examiner, he hanged himself in the bathroom using an exercise band.

Those who came in contact with Cornell in his last days report that he was in good spirits, with plans for the future. His wife, Vicky, spoke with him by phone sometime after the show, reporting that he was slurring his words. She says he took an extra dose of Ativan, an anti-anxiety medication often used by recovering addicts that can impair judgment. After speaking with him, she called Soundgarden's bodyguard, who kicked in the doors to Cornell's hotel room and bedroom to find him dead on the floor with blood coming from his mouth and the band around his neck.

Cornell leaves behind three children: a daughter from a previous marriage and a son and daughter with Vicky, who says he "would not hurt them intentionally by taking his own life."
