Josef Szekely, a Viennese artist and photographer took the oldest photo of Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city. The picture was taken by 151 years ago, in 1863 during an expedition in the Balkans funded by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. During that time the Balkans were under the rule of the Ottoman Empire.
This picture adorns the walls of Thessaloniki New City Hall.
The National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation, which bought the picture from the National Library of Austria, donated the picture to the municipality of Thessaloniki.
