Puerto Rican rappers Calle 13 have won a record nine Latin Grammys including best album, for Entren Los Que Quieran.
Brothers Rene Perez Joglar and Eduardo Jose Cabra Martinez, who receive little airplay in countries including the US, dedicated an award "to those who don't sell out and make real music".
Colombian singer Shakira won person of the year and best female pop vocal album for Sale El Sol.
Usher and Sean Kingston were among performers at the Las Vegas ceremony.
Shakira became the youngest recipient of the Latin Recording Academy's person of the year award On receiving another award, Joglar said: "For me, this is a gift I'm giving to everyone so that they can feel proud of their roots, of their homeland.
"That's really lacking here in the United States."
The anti-establishment duo have taken swipes at targets including the White House and the Vatican in their songs.
Their track Calma Pueblo, with its lyrics likening the Vatican to the mafia, won best alternative song.
Shakira, accepting her person of the year award, said; "Without love, nothing is worth anything. Without love, I am nothing."
Puerto Rican singer Sie7e was named best new artist and Franco De Vita won best male pop vocal album for En Primera Fila.
Multi-national trio Alex, Jorge y Lena, who hail from Cuba, Spain and Colombia, won best pop group album for their self-titled collection.
