YouTube: The 10 Most Successful Videos Climbing at Billion View Club
In December 2012, YouTube had the first video to surpass a billion views, officially launching "Billion View Club", the golden directory of billions of views.
Since its launch in February 2005, YouTube has focused on delivering so-called viral content, that is, videos that will get as many views across the globe as possible. In November 2005, Nike's ad with Ronaldinho was the first video to surpass the one million views barrier.
In the beginning the most popular videos were the ones with funny content, but along the way, music videos by popular and successful artists began to climb. The beginning of the evolution of music videos came with Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance", which in 2009 became the first video clip to top the list with most views, but has since lost the "throne" as competition has grown increasingly on the web platform.
In December 2012, Psy's "Gangnam Style" became the first video to surpass a billion views, officially launching YouTube's "Billion View Club" gold list, the list of videos that count billions of views. Justin Bieber's "Baby" joined the club in June 2015, and just four months later another ten videos made it onto the gold list. As of December 2017, the platform counted 87 videos that had exceeded one billion views. Of these 19 exceeded two billion views, three exceeded 3 billion views and just one video, Luis Fonsi's "Despacito" and Daddy Yankee's 4 billion views.
The videos that reached the fastest one billion views are Adele's "Hello" (87 days), "Despacito" (96 days) and Ed Sheeran's "Shape of You" (97 days). As for the gold artists on the list, it's Katy Perry and Justin Bieber who count the most listings in the list (four each). Shakira, Taylor Swift, Calvin Harris, Ariana Grande and Bruno Mars each have three, Fifth Harmony, Psy, Adele, Ellie Goulding, The Weeknd, Ed Sheeran, Nicky Jam, Eminem, Maluma, J Balvin and Ricky Martin. Only two artists have two videos with over two billion views: Swift and Perry.
Today, the Billion View Club's Top 10 comprises nine music videos (including a children's song) and an episode of the Russian children's animated series "The Mass and the Bear":
