Letterman Cajoles Sonny & Cher Into Singing "I Got You Babe"

1987
The long-since-divorced Sonny and Cher perform "I Got You Babe" on Late Night with David Letterman.

They didn't plan to sing, but Letterman makes the request and persists over Cher's objections. When the band starts playing the song, Sonny takes the stage and Cher reluctantly follows, asking her ex-husband, "Do I start?" just before hitting her verse. The performance starts off a little rough and Cher flubs it a bit, but they clearly make a connection and enjoy this last rendition of their signature song. Convincing Cher to sing is especially surprising considering her appearance on the show the previous year where she told Letterman she had avoided his show because she thought he was "an a--hole."
