Every year, American families bring home tens of thousands of children through domestic and foreign adoptions. Bringing home any new child takes adjustment. Bringing home a child of a different race adds another layer of complexity.
ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY
On November 8, 1900, the author of Gone with the Wind , Margaret Mitchell, is born in Atlanta, Georgia. She began her writing career as a journalist, but after an injury, she devoted herself to fiction largely about the South before and during the Civil War. Gone with the Wind sold over 1 million copies within six months of its publication in 1936. Eight million copies had been sold by the time Mitchell died in 1949. To date, over 25 million copies have been sold. The book was so popular that it was made into a classic 1939 movie starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh.
Three decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the United States said Washington and its allies are still confronting formidable communist adversaries and the free world needs to continue to defend against threats from Russia and China.
The U.S. intends to hold aerial exercises with South Korea as planned, despite North Korea’s accusation that the joint drills are “confrontational.”
VIDEO: In the 30 years that have passed since the Berlin Wall came down and ended a decades-long division between the eastern and western parts of the city, it is artists who have injected new life into the abandoned buildings in what was communist East Berlin. And as VOA reports, this cultural scene became a driving force behind the reconciliation of East and West, a process that continues to this day.
VIDEO: The social media application, TikTok, is booming in popularity especially with kids who use it to share short, usually funny videos. But TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance, is owned by China, and this is raising concerns among U.S. lawmakers worried about the security of the app’s American users.
