U.S. first lady Melania Trump visited Malawi Thursday on the second leg of her four-nation tour of Africa. Ms. Trump landed in the capital, Lilongwe, and went to a primary school where about 8,000 children are taught by just 75 teachers. She watched children taking part in an English lesson and later spoke with some of the teachers .

ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY On October 4, 1927, sculptors begin carving Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills National Forest of South Dakota. The iconic American landmark, featuring the images of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln and Theodore Roosevelt, took 12 years for sculptor Gutzon Borglum to complete. The idea for the sculpture came from a South Dakotan historian named Doane Robinson who saw it as a way to bring more tourists to the state. Over 2 million people visit the monument annually.
