VIDEO: On Saturday, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, became the latest American city to suffer a mass-shooting. A gunman entered the Tree of Life Synagogue and opened fire, killing 11 before wounding police officers responding to the scene. Three of the city’s religious leaders joined to support a city they say will not be broken .
ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY
On October 30, 1938, up to a million Americans panic during an Orson Welles radio broadcast of “War of the Worlds,” a fictional story about a Martian invasion of Earth. Many listeners tuned into the Columbia Broadcasting System broadcast after it started and missed the introduction that explained Welles would be presenting the radio adaptation of the classic H.G. Wells’ book. The adaptation included realistic sounding news clips causing many to believe the invasion was real. Some Americans panicked, causing traffic jams as they fled cities. Some asked the electric companies to turn off the power so that the invading aliens could not see their lights.
Most Americans would fail a U.S. citizenship test if they had to take it. Just one in three Americans can pass a multiple choice exam featuring questions taken from the U.S. Citizenship Test, according to a recent survey .
Cambodian-American Laura Som said her mother raised her to never get involved in politics. Her mother would say politics is “a bloodbath, and we don’t want to see you walk into that.” However, this attitude may be changing.
VIDEO: Each October, fans of comics , anime, graphic novels and manga (Japanese comics) descend on New York for Comic-Con. A highlight of the international pop culture festival is cosplay. Cosplayers dress as characters from their favorite comics. These days more and more women are partaking .
British Jews held vigils Monday to honor the 11 people killed last week in the mass shooting at Pittsburgh’s Tree of Life Synagogue. As they gathered in London, Liverpool, Brighton and Oxford to mourn those killed in the deadliest attack on Jews in U.S. history, many said the massacre has added greater urgency to the question, “Where’s safe?”
