The Toast of New Orleans 1950

The Toast of New Orleans
MGM, 1950, Color, 103 minutes, ***½
Released August, 1950

Pepe (Mario Lanza) and his uncle (J. Carrol Naish) are fishermen in a little village in Louisiana. They are happy enough until New Orleans opera star, Suzette Micheline (Kathryn Grayson), comes to the village and sings for them. Pepe thinks he's in love with Suzette, and he's intrigued by the idea of making money singing. So, he and Uncle Nicky move to New Orleans and Pepe goes to work for the opera company. But, his singing doesn't need as much work as do his manners and his "polish," so work begins on turning Pepe into a gentleman. It's a good story with lots of wonderful music.

"Be My Love," sung by Grayson and Lanza was a big hit, and was nominated for Best Song Academy Award. Other highlights include the highly energetic "Tina Lina," danced by James Mitchell and Rita Moreno ,"Boom Biddy Boom Boom" (sung by Lanza) and a slew of great opera arias sung by Grayson and Lanza. The finale scene is great, too!
