'BORN THIS WAY' SELLS 1.1 MILLION IN A WEEK

Within a week, Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” has gone platinum.

The 25-year-old’s anticipated record has debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 chart, selling 1,108,000 albums in the first week, Billboard reports.

This isn’t truly a surprise, as “Born This Way” was expected to enter at No. 1, but just a month ago the singer’s record label was expecting sales to be around 400,000. On the album's May 23 release date – the same day that Amazon was offering the album for 99 cents – that estimate was bumped up to somewhere between 650,000 and 700,000.

But by last Thursday, when Amazon was offering the album as an mp3 download again for 99 cents, it seemed that a million units sold was within Gaga's reach. According to Billboard, it's estimated that Amazon sold more than 440,000 downloads of the discounted disc.

"Born This Way's" sales performance makes Gaga the fifth woman to sell more than a million within a week, and making “Born This Way's” sales week the largest for any album since 50 Cent’s “The Massacre” sold 1,141,000 in its first week in 2005.

And believe it or not, this is also the superstar's first No. 1 album. Gaga’s “The Fame” peaked at No. 2 with "The Fame Monster" landing at No. 5.
