Whitney Houston Dies

2012

Whitney Houston is found dead in the bathtub of her suite at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Los Angeles, where she was slated to perform at Clive Davis' annual Pre-Grammy party later that night.

Houston, 48 years old, is discovered by her assistant face down in the tub. When paramedics can't revive her, she is declared dead at 3:55 p.m. PST. (The Clive Davis party goes on anyway, with Davis claiming it's in tribute to the singer.) The death is ruled an accidental drowning, with heart disease and cocaine use contributing factors. The coroner's report reveals that Houston had been using cocaine and was taking various prescription drugs. Houston's death comes as a shock, and at the Grammy Awards the next night, host LL Cool J opens the ceremony with a prayer for Houston. Later in the show, Jennifer Hudson sings "I Will Always Love You," a song Houston performed at the 1993 ceremony, in tribute. Houston is Grammy royalty, with six wins in her lifetime. At the time of her death, Houston is working on a comeback, with a starring role in the film Sparkle alongside Jordin Sparks. The film is released later in 2012.
