The Dark Side of Jerry Lewis
Years after the #MeToo movement took hold, unearthing decades of systemic abuse across Hollywood and various other industries, stories are still coming to light about historical misconduct. The latest addition to the pile: Julie Miller, Kirby Dick, and Amy Ziering’s story about Jerry Lewis, an honorary Oscar winner and beloved comedian who several women say sexually harassed (and in one case, sexually assaulted) them between 1960 and 1968. Documentarians Dick and Ziering brought the women’s stories to Vanity Fair so that they might finally be heard. One of them, Hope Holiday, told Dick “she thought she would take these stories to her grave,” he says. “She never thought anyone would be interested. She never thought there’d be a safe space to tell them.” (Ziering and Dick also made a short film with some of the women’s stories, which can be seen here.)
