Charlize Theron Is Back in Action
Charlize Theron as a fearless, immortal warrior whose name literally translates to “fighter of men”? Yes, please. That’s the premise of The Old Guard,Gina Prince-Bythewood’s upcoming Netflix action movie. Anthony Breznican has a first look at the film, as well as an interview with its Oscar-winning star—who explains that this story finds her badass heroine at a bit of a crossroads. “It was important to feel the weight of thousands and thousands of years on her,” Theron told Vanity Fair. “The worst part for her is just feeling like she’s not doing anything. So what is the point, you know? She’s lost faith, not just in herself but in humanity. I think a lot of people can relate to that at this moment in time. We go through periods in life where we just look at the world and go, Oh, my God… You just feel like you’re pushing a rock up a mountain.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Richard Lawson wholeheartedly recommends the second season of Dead to Me,particularly for Christina Applegate’s ace performance; Kenzie Bryant notes how the pandemic has finally proven, without a shadow of a doubt, that stars are in fact just like us; K. Austin Collins reconsiders Crash, the most controversial best-picture winner in recent memory; and André Holland stops by Little Gold Men to chat about his jazzy new TV series, The Eddy.
