ON THIS DAY IN AMERICAN HISTORY | |

On December 6,1884, workers complete the Washington Monument in Washington, D.C., by placing an aluminum plate at the top of the 169-meter, Egyptian-style obelisk. Fundraising for the monument started in 1832, and construction began on July 4, 1848. Construction was halted between 1854 to 1877 because of a lack of funds and the Civil War. The Washington Monument is both the world’s tallest predominately stone structure and the world’s tallest obelisk. For several years, it was the tallest structure in the world, but was overtaken by the Eiffel Tower in 1889. |
