The Biggest Surprises of the Golden Globe Nominations
Were you woken up from your peaceful sleep by your agent this morning? Then congratulations, you are a Golden Globe nominee! The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its picks this morning, and while it might be short on the truly oddball choices that burnish its legacy (though shout-out to Cate Blanchett and Where’d You Go, Bernadette), there are plenty of surprises and good old snubs to be had. The HWD team has pored over the nominations for the sources of both joy and outrage; join us in shaking our fists on behalf of Little Women and Lupita Nyong’o, cheering for Andrew Scott’s Hot Priest and The Two Popes, and pondering how you can nominate the L to the O.G., Brian Cox, for Successionand leave out his rapping onscreen son, Jeremy Strong.
Elsewhere in HWD, Mark Harris takes a look at what the Globes can tell us about the best-picture race; Sharilyn Johnson reports from an onstage conversation between Stephen Colbert and Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who has “nothing but regrets” about one element of Seinfeld; and Katey Rich takes a deep dive into this year’s best-original-song Oscar race, where some major pop stars are competing against each other, but it might be an animated queen who once again reigns supreme.
