Hugh Grant’s Very English Comeback
Like many of the most successful movie stars of his generation, Hugh Grant is learning that working in television has its perks—even if it means hewing to a slightly more demanding schedule than he’s used to. “It’s way too long—way too long,” he told contributor Emily Yoshida in a profile that appears in V.F.’s second special 2019 Emmy Awards issue. “I’m such a baby about television. I didn’t even realize that HBO is considered kind of the crème de la crème. Is that right?” Yet Grant—who will star next in the upcoming HBO limited series The Undoing—has also excelled on television, particularly in the part that marked his prestige TV debut: the lead role of disgraced MP Jeremy Thorpe in A Very English Scandal. The part, Yoshida writes, “is a satisfying curdling of so many of Grant’s trademarks—the rakish charm, the massive ego ripe for a comeuppance—with a very private vulnerability lurking underneath. And perhaps television—way too long as it may be—has allowed for a full appreciation of what Grant has always been capable of.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Laura Bradley profiles Samantha Bee, in another special Emmy Awards issue story; Yohana Desta swoons over the first trailer for Greta Gerwig’s Little Women;Joy Press chats with Tarell Alvin McCraney about his emotional follow-up to Moonlight, a new show on OWN called David Makes Man;and Bruce Miller opens up about the third season finale of The Handmaid’s Tale.
