Spider-Man Shake-Up: How Worried Should You Be?
Comic book fans the world over began gnashing their teeth and rending their garments on Tuesday evening, when word broke that Disney and Sony had failed to negotiate a cofinancing deal to continue sharing Spider-Man. That means Marvel czar Kevin Feige, who successfully ushered Tom Holland’s take on the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will no longer be involved in producing future films—and that Spider-Man is now out of the MCU. But after taking another look back at Sony’s Marvel-free Spidey movies—a list that includes the Tobey Maguire iteration of the franchise as well as newer entries like the Oscar-winning Into the Spider-Verse and the not-Oscar-winning but very entertaining Venom—Laura Bradley came to a reassuring conclusion: “While some of Sony’s older Spider features are beginning to show their age, that shouldn’t diminish all that they accomplished—especially before super-verses were a mainstream pleasure.”
